Fire Rated Doors

Each year, there are an estimated 27,500 fires in storage structures, 18,000 fires in stores and offices, and overall, a total of almost half a million fires in some sort of structure or dwelling. Fire is a very serious threat to your business. Because of this, many business owners choose to install commercial fire-rated doors to partition the commercial part of their building from the office space. In other cases, these fire-rated doors are installed to help comply with local building codes and ordinances.

The Benefits of A Fire-Rated Door

Different from your standard commercial doors, fire-rated doors are installed within a certain type of frame and with specific hardware, and are intended to the spread of fire throughout your commercial property. These fire-rated doors can protect your assets as well as your employees, thus allowing you to get back to business much faster after a fire. When a fire breaks out during work hours, these doors help protect your employees from the spread of smoke and gases that spread from the fire. As some noxious fumes and gases can spread quite quickly, these fire-rated doors can provide both protection and peace of mind.

How Fire-Rated Doors Work

Fire-rated doors are part of a passive fire protection system and are designed to reduce the spread of fire and smoke throughout a building or structure. Passive fire protection (PFP) is comprised of a group of systems that compartmentalize a structure by using fire-resistance-rated walls and floors. These systems contain the fire and keep it from spreading quickly so that people inside the building can escape. In addition to fire-rated doors, dampers are used in commercial ductwork to stop or lessen the spread of fire and smoke throughout your commercial property’s ductwork system. Firewalls and floors then help further separate the building into physical compartments to stop the spread of fire/smoke from room to room. Each room can then be equipped with a fire-rated door.

To be classified as a fire-rated door, the door needs to be installed with the appropriately-sized fire-resistant fittings, such as the frame and door hardware. This video from the ASFP (Association for Specialist Fire Protection) in the United Kingdom does a great job of demonstrating how these fire-rated doors work.

Most fire-rated doors are made from heavy materials such as metal or gypsum. The term fire-rated simply means that when the door is installed properly, it will not combust within a certain period of time during the fire. While ratings vary, most fire doors have a 20 to 90-minute rating.
